Can we talk about forgiveness for a quick minute? Lets really dig deep here. This is one of those topics we can graze over and take away just what we want to hear.
But today, I want you to pause and really take in what I’m about to throw at you. You see, forgiveness isn’t a one time thing. Forgiveness can be a choice we have to make each and every day. Sometimes we go awhile without thinking about the thing or person who wronged us and life is good. But then something creeps up on us and reminds us of the pain that you thought had been long forgotten. True forgiveness happens in those moments. What we choose to do in those moments…. that is forgiveness. Do we stop to pray and realign our focus on positive things? Or do we dwell in the pain, possibly even reminding everyone around us that we have forgiven this person or thing that wronged us?
You see true forgiveness comes from Christ and He says forgiveness doesn’t keep track of those wrongs. When He died to forgive us, it wiped our sins away, as far as the east is from the west. Do we do the same? Do we choose to wipe the painful moments away each time they try to pop into our lives? Or do we dwell in them just long enough to let people know what we’ve been through?
Another important thing to note is that true forgiveness does not hold anything over another person. Other people don’t owe you anything because of what you have forgiven them for. This can be a hard pill to swallow because we want to see justice. But the truth is we may never know why someone hurt us or our loved ones. We may never hear their apology. We may never even know who is responsible. But we are called to forgive anyway!
Christ calls us to be the salt and light to a broken world. Imagine the difference you could make by shining your light of forgiveness in a world full of darkness and sin. The shame and bitterness can leave us blinded, but your light could be the exact thing someone needs to be healed. You’ll never know if you don’t learn to listen, obey, and forgive!
It’s not time to sit back! It’s time to stand for what is right and change the world, over offer of forgiveness at a time.
1) Are there people in your life that you need to forgive?
2) Have you ever withheld forgiveness from someone when you knew God was calling you to forgive them? How did you feel?
